As Mergen Chess, we set out with the mission of raising an intelligent, knowledgeable and thinking future, in addition to our professional chess training. Our goal is not only to train professional players; but to raise individuals who will make chess a part of their lives and make a difference at school, in daily life and on their career journey by benefiting from the intellectual practices of this game.

How Was Mergen Chess Born?

Serkan Soysal, the founder of Mergen Chess and International Master, experienced an important awareness about his life during his 2-month retreat in Serbia in August 2019, when he was only 25 years old and at the peak of his career.

Seeing that period as one of the turning points of his life, Soysal came to the conclusion that transferring his knowledge and experience to others and helping people is a more noble purpose than living only for more cups, awards and success.

He founded Mergen Chess in March 2020 to teach the game of chess, which he knows best, to individuals of all ages and levels. Today, Mergen Chess provides professional chess education to Turkish students in many countries, especially Turkey, as well as Azerbaijan, Germany, Austria, Netherlands and England.

The Story Behind Our Name: Why "Mergen"?

When determining the brand name, Serkan Soysal deliberately stayed away from the commonly preferred method of "using the surname". He wanted this chess club to belong to everyone, not just himself.

During his research, the name "Mergen Tengri", which represents mind, intelligence, science and philosophy in Turkish and Altai mythology, caught his attention. Mergen Tengri was a Tengri believed to sit on the seventh layer of the sky and give wisdom to people with the arrow he shot.

Realizing that this figure strongly overlapped with Mergen Chess's mission, he named the brand he founded Mergen. The perfect harmony of Mergen Tengri's wisdom, intelligence and guidance features with Mergen Chess's educational mission was the main factor in choosing this name.
